Art museums play a vital role in our communities. We serve, collectively, as stewards of our unique stories, histories, and visual legacies. We share, study, and preserve visual culture, offering a venue for the coming together of communities, learning, and inspiration. The Miller Art Museum in downtown Sturgeon Bay is Door County’s art museum, stewarding more than 1,500 works of art for the community that greatly contributes to the cultural tapestry of the area and the greater Midwest region. In July 2024, the museum will debut a new solo exhibition featuring the work of Henry Payer, a Ho-Chunk enrolled in the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska, and a multidisciplinary artist currently based in Sioux City, Iowa. The exhibition marks the first of this magnitude that celebrates an Indigenous artist and the artist’s return to his ancestral homeland in the State of Wisconsin.
