Compass just walked away from a legal fight that was supposed to define the next era of real estate portals, but the retreat might actually signal something more strategic than surrender. The brokerage officially dropped its lawsuit against Zillow this week after the portal giant quietly revised the listing policy that sparked the dispute. What started as a hard line threatening to sideline listings not uploaded within 24 hours has softened into something more accommodating, allowing pre-market exposure on Zillow before properties hit the MLS. That shift gave Compass what it wanted in practice even without a courtroom victory, making the lawsuit harder to justify.
