How can cities become more pedestrian-friendly?It’s a question dozens of local transportation planners, advocates and residents sought to answer, sometimes in minute detail, as they wandered neighborhoods this month during a pair of “walk and roll” audits in Sun Prairie and Madison. The audits came as part of the national Week Without Driving initiative, designed to spotlight the opportunities and challenges for non-automotive transportation in communities across the country. Locally, representatives from AARP Wisconsin and the Wisconsin Council of the Blind and Visually Impaired joined planners from the Greater Madison Metropolitan Planning Organization and cities to explore sidewalks and shared-use paths from the perspective of pedestrians. Armed with clipboards, participants were generally looking for whether their trip was comfortable, safe, functional and interesting, said Zia Brucaya, RoundTrip manager for the Greater Madison MPO... RSK: About time....now if people will obey the rules is another question. | ||
